Thus, microrgids are characterized by a well-defined cluster of controllable loads, supply sources, and storage technologies that can be managed as one entity, and, which can interact with the wider energy grid in specific ways.
A very distinct feature of microgrids is the capability to disconnect from the wider energy grid in case of grid disturbances (e.g. blackout) or for economic reasons and reconnect when the grid disturbances have vanished. However, Distributed Energy Resources (e.g. PV, electric storage), which cannot disconnect from the main grid have similar project design and control challenges as microgrids, and therefore, they are also part of our work and considerations. Also, some microgrids operate in complete islanded conditions if they are in remote locations and they are also part of our research and technical work.
